During an interview with Jess Cagle about his book, “Superficial”, Andy Cohen claimed he was nervous to include the story of his cringe-worthy encounter with Taylor Swift. While it’s not uncommon for Andy to have awkward encounters with celebrities, according to him, this one had to do with the highly publicized feud between Taylor and Katy. For those who don’t remember, the beef between the two pop stars stems from Katy allegedly poaching some dancers from Taylor’s tour in 2013. From there, the two have been exceedingly icy toward one another in public and Taylor even wrote “Bad Blood”, which seemed to be about her relationship with Katy.
Despite many years going by, the feud between Taylor and Katy has persisted and this is exactly what Andy used to his advantage while trying to be funny when he ran into Taylor a few years ago.
“So, the Taylor Swift story… I saw her at the MET ball afterparty. I don’t know her. But I have a history of saying exactly the wrong things to people and I did to her,” Andy told Jess and the audience at the Entertainment Weekly press conference. “I had seen Katy Perry, who was kind of in the corner. And I’m standing there waiting for a drink at the bar. And Taylor Swift is walking by saying to her friend, ‘Where can we go stand? It’s so crowded here and Lady Gaga is about to sing’. And I turn to her, she wasn’t talking to me, but I inserted myself, and I said, ‘Your friend Katy is over there and there’s no one sitting over there.'”
According to Andy, Taylor was totally put off by his joke.
“She basically made it clear to me that this was the exact opposite of her friend and then kind of ‘Please don’t mention it’ on my show… in harsher words. I should say.”
This seems to be in line with the type of energy some, including Katy, have stated Taylor has underneath her sweet demeanor. As Katy described her, “Regina George in sheep’s clothes”.
While Taylor clearly thought Andy was being “shady”, he claims he was just making a joke.
“And then I said to her, ‘Well, at least you know where not to sit,'” Andy said to Jess. “I thought it was a good recovery.”
Of course, Andy did mention the whole thing on his show and then into his book… So, clearly, Taylor didn’t scare him too much.
