According to Nasir El-Rufai, governor of Kaduna State, the anti-open grazing ordinance passed by southern governors would not work.
The law, according to El-Rufai, is unworkable.
He spoke after a visit to the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Secretariat in Abuja on Tuesday, September 21.
He denounced the politicization of the issue and stated that the anti-open grazing law is not the answer to the ongoing farmer/herder conflict.
He stated that ranching is the solution, but that it is not something that can be accomplished immediately.
“The Northern States Governors Forum has already said that open grazing is not a sustainable cattle production method,” he remarked. We also need to get moving.
“But moving towards ranching cannot be done overnight. We have to plan, we have to have resources and we have to implement it sensibly. It is not a matter of populist legislation or saying tomorrow this or that. It is not a solution.
“What is unhelpful is the politicizing of the situation and pass legislation that you know that you cannot implement.”
He added that Kaduna State would require at least N114 billion to put together 14 ranches to fully settle herders and their families.
